Flexible and cost-effective charging: SMA and Audi connect energy management with e-mobility

One advantage of e-mobility is that users can charge their vehicles conveniently at home. Smart solutions coordinate electric vehicle charging with the requirements of other generators and loads in the household. The smart SMA Charge S charging solution combined with the Audi e-tron connect charging system now integrates the all-electric SUV Audi e-tron into the domestic energy management system. If the home is equipped with a PV system, SMA Charge S even prioritizes solar power for charging the vehicle. “SMA Charge S allows SUV Audi e-tron(*) drivers to easily integrate their electric vehicles into the domestic energy management system and use sustainable solar power,” said Dr. Stephan Engel, charging solutions product manager at SMA. “Thanks to SMA Charge S and the Audi e-tron connect charging system, Audi e-tron drivers can charge their vehicles at home flexibly, reliably and in a cost-optimized manner. Just like the other SMA charging solutions, SMA Charge S allows the e-vehicle to be charged with solar power, making e-mobility even more convenient.” “Coordinated networking between the home and vehicle makes the Audi e-tron an integral part of the smart home,” said Ansgar Neudecker, home charging project manager at AUDI AG. “Seamless integration allows owners to make full use of all the smart charging features – from power outage protection and cost optimization through to solar power utilization. For our customers, this is another important step toward sustainable mobility – and it will be followed by many more.” Charge your car when the electricity is affordableSMA Charge S works with the e-tron connect charging system to ensure that the Audi e-tron is always charged with the highest available power that the home connection and vehicle allow. SMA Charge S also takes into consideration the needs of other household appliances, preventing the home connection from being overloaded. Integration into the domestic energy management system allows the vehicle to be charged at exactly the times when electricity is most affordable. Factors such as the planned departure time and required state of battery charge are also taken into account. Another particularly cost-efficient and sustainably way for PV system owners to charge their Audi e-tron is using solar power from their own roofs. Audi customers can view their individual charging statistics and the charge status in the myAudi portal and on the myAudi app. In addition to the charging times and the amount of electricity used, the relevant costs are also presented in detail. Future car owners will find a local partner from SMA’s extensive network of solar power professionals to check and set up the home installation. Alternatively, their local Audi partner will arrange for a home check during which an electrician will provide advice on customizing and optimizing the charging solution. (*)Applies to all Audi e-tron models. Learn more about SMA charging solutions for electric vehicles here. Electronic Waste: Recycling Beats Disposal

Electronic Waste: Recycling Beats Disposalby Matthias Schaepers, 11. Aug. 2020 More than 53 million metric tons of electronic waste were accumulated worldwide in 2019. That is equivalent to 100 times the weight of the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. This is one consequence of rising consumption, the gradual digitalization of our lifestyles and the diminishing service lives of electrical appliances. But besides materials that are harmful to our health and the environment, electronic waste also contains valuable raw materials that can be sustainably reused. Currently, only around 17 percent of the electronic waste accumulated worldwide is recycled each year. The rest is mostly either dumped at landfill sites or incinerated. Sometimes it disappears via dubious routes and is sold via intermediaries to countries where the disposal standards are very low. There are many good reasons to minimize the amount of electronic waste and increase the recycling rate. One important aspect is the risk posed to health and the environment. Electronic waste can contain highly toxic substances. Some devices contain mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic or beryllium. Incinerating these materials instead of disposing of them properly can result in serious harm to health. We are familiar with the images of children from developing countries that burn our electronic waste in order to get to the valuable materials. Recycling is worth it However, at the same time, electronic waste contains many valuable materials. By way of illustration, these are the quantities of valuable raw materials contained in one million cellphones: around 35 kg of gold, around 350 kg of silver, around 15 kg of palladium and around 15 kg of copper. So it is worth using the many valuable materials found in waste to manufacture new electronic components. That reduces not only the amount of waste, but also demand for raw materials. And let us not forget that raw material extraction often has negative effects on the environment and human health. Thus, recycling also protects sensitive ecosystems, reduces the amount of energy consumed in the transportation of raw materials and prevents human rights abuses in newly industrialized countries. Recycling starts with product design As consumers, what we do with our electronic devices after utilizing them is in our own hands. However, it is at least as important that manufacturers are also aware of their responsibility. And that begins right from the design of the electronic devices. That is because the point at which the device becomes electronic waste and how the materials it contains can be recycled are determined at this early stage. The average cell phone is used for around 18 months. Even if such a thing as planned obsolescence, meaning devices breaking down after a short useful life, is not permitted by law, some providers even incorporate precisely this sort of thing in their strategy. Consumers then frequently think that they are buying devices at particularly favorable prices. Buying high-quality products that last longer as a result is clearly the better alternative. This is because in this case, the manufacturers focus on counteracting resource wastage by extending the useful life. This is a crucial aspect for SMA. The quality and longevity of inverters are taken into account right from the design stage. After all, the calculation is very simple: devices that can be used for twice as long mean that only half as much electronic waste is generated. Another important topic is reparability. Today, many products can no longer be repaired at all. This means that when they suffer even the most minor damage, entire devices often have to be thrown away. Reparability means that companies are responsible for designing their products in such a way that they can be easily repaired and maintained. This is an important point that SMA also takes to heart. For many years, we have been taking faulty inverters back, repairing them where possible and putting them in our warehouse with replacement devices. In turn, this ensures that customers immediately receive a recycled replacement device if service is needed. In addition, SMA is increasingly offering assembly replacement on-site. This avoids the need to dispose of entire devices. Only the defective component is replaced. Design for Recycling If products are designed such that repairs can easily be carried out, they can also be recycled more easily after use. This is referred to as design for recycling. SMA has set itself some ambitious targets in this regard. For example, 90 percent of the components in each of our products is to be recyclable by 2025. At the same time, we are working on steadily increasing the percentage of secondary raw materials that we use in our inverters – and reducing the percentage of critical materials. After all, they are not only questionable in relation to the production and use of electronic devices. Obtaining and disposing of these materials is also problematic. They often prevent components from being recycled. This means that they conflict with our aim, which is to return as many materials as possible to the material cycle as secondary raw materials once our inverters reach the end of their useful lives. And what can I do? Any device that is equipped with electronics in any form does not belong in the household waste but should go to a recycling center. Disposal is free of charge there. Workshops for people with disabilities often accept electronic devices, too. You can donate old electronic devices. There is a variety of organizations that collect old cell phones, for example, and then use the proceeds to support environmental projects. Old electronic devices do not belong in drawers or in the attic. Opt for durable, high-quality products. In the long term, that is also the most cost-effective way. Check whether your broken electronic device can still be repaired. There are repair cafés, for example, that can help with this. There are many products, such as children’s toys, with small electronic functions that are not really necessary. Make a conscious decision not to buy them. Determining for how long we use electronic products and which products we really need is in our own hands. Recycling is important, but it is only the very last step. Up to that point, we should use the product as well and for as long as possible. About missionN Matthias Schäpers is SMA’s Sustainability Officer and Climate Protection Ambassador for Kassel of the Hessian Ministry of the Environment For years, there have been calls for a shift toward sustainable development in order to achieve the agreed climate targets. Scientists unanimously agree that the longer we wait, the more extreme the corrective steps will have to be. This demand is about nothing more and nothing less than what should go without saying – leaving future generations the same living conditions that we have benefited from. We are rightly demanding that government create the appropriate framework conditions for this. But does this fit in with our own behavior? We often act in exactly the opposite way, sometimes consciously, but largely unconsciously and out of habit. Our lifestyle therefore often has effects that we do not even know about. Businesses also need to play their part and take on more responsibility. They can influence the conditions within their production areas, the supply chain and the use of their products, both during and after use. They can encourage their employees to use resources in a more sustainable way, while also making use of their employees’ potential. Many employees already consider it essential to choose a company that takes sustainable behavior seriously and promotes it. The aim of my blog, missionN, is to provide you with valuable information and inspiring suggestions on the topic of sustainable behavior at work and at home. In doing so, I will also actively report on the commitment to sustainability at SMA. You can find more information in the Global Waste Monitor 2020

Dubai’s chocolate manufacturer switches to solar power

Dubai’s chocolate manufacturer switches to solar power by Asonele Kotu (guest post), 19. Oct. 2020 Chocolate and the sun are actually not a good combination, but the La Ronda chocolate factory in Dubai proves the two can go together very well. The factory is now relying on solar power to manufacture its speciality “Chocodates.” The goal is to produce the Chocodates with a zero-carbon footprint. Making chocolate is a costly and energy consuming process. The practice of sustainability has always played a key role in La Ronda’s vision, which relates to the entire value chain and reconciles economic, social, and environmental concerns: no genetically modified ingredients, both UTZ- and fair-trade-certified chocolate, energy-efficient LED lighting in the modern production and storage facilities, and now a climate-neutral solar power supply as well. Taking sustainability further The factory has a processing capacity of 5 tons per day with a chocolate praline size of 10 to 16 grams. A PV system installed on the roof with a total capacity of 650  kilowatts peak generates 950 megawatt hours of solar power per year, covering around 70% of the entire production energy demand. Twenty-three Sunny Tripower 25000TL-30s and the SMA Cluster Controller ensure that 100% of the valuable solar power can be used in production. Banking on e-mobility La Ronda aims to capitalize on the global trend to e-mobility as well. The charging stations and solar parking lots will be made available for private electric vehicles as well as for suppliers and visitors in the future. Chocodates will become sustainable in every respect. La Ronda LLC  with headquarters in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was founded in 1992 by Fawaz Masri and is part of the Notions Group. The main product is called “Chocodates” – dates filled with roasted almonds and coated with chocolate. Dates are a symbol of both wealth and health in Arabia.  La Ronda employs more than 300 people and exports to approximately 35 countries worldwide.

SMA is looking for solar pioneers

SMA is looking for PV pioneers who laid the foundation for a sustainable, decentralized energy supply with their PV systems many years ago. With their enthusiasm for photovoltaics, they paved the way for today’s energy transition. All PV system operators who installed an SMA solar inverter or battery inverter in the early years of photovoltaics and are still producing solar power today can participate in the photo campaign. SMA will be giving away 15 solar outdoor packages. The closing date for all entries is December 31, 2020. Generate energy using the power of the sun. For a clean environment, to protect the climate. With no emissions. Sustainable, decentralized and global. What is a logical conclusion for getting climate change under control today was something “exotic” for “nutcases” and lone wolves in the early years of photovoltaics. The PV visionaries often received only a shake of the head for their commitment. However, that didn’t stop them from installing PV inverters and modules with a lot of passion and technical skill. Mostly commonly seen were inverters from SMA. After all, in 1991, the PV-WR 1500 was the first series-produced PV inverter on the market. And the string technology developed by SMA in 1995 significantly simplified the installation of PV systems, thus laying the foundation for the continued success of solar technology. In 1995, PV-WR was followed by the first Sunny Boy and by the Sunny Boy TL inverter in 2008, which had well over one million sales worldwide. Participate for a chance to win – here’s howTogether with system operators around the world, SMA now wants to revive the pioneering years of PV in a photo campaign. The competition is open to anyone residing in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Italy, the U.S. or Australia who installed an SMA PV or battery inverter at least 15 years ago and whose PV system is still running today. Simply post a photo with yourself, the SMA inverter and some key information on social media with the hashtag #PVPioneers or send it to SMA via email (pvpioneers@SMA.de) or by post (see Terms of Participation). The pictures will be displayed on a social wall – a digital photo gallery – on the SMA website. A jury will select the 15 most impressive and award them with a solar outdoor package. Click here to see the website and the terms of participation. Sunny Boy Storage becomes even more flexible

Using sustainable and cost-effective solar power from their own roofs is becoming increasingly attractive to homeowners. With battery-storage systems, they can easily supply themselves with self-generated power even in the evenings. In addition to new PV systems, it is also worth retrofitting old PV systems with a battery system when these are no longer eligible for subsidies, for example. Therefore, SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) is now making storage solutions with the proven Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 even more flexible. With the AC-coupled solution, users can integrate battery-storage systems into both new and existing PV systems easily and flexibly and expand the storage capacity at any time without having to interfere with the PV system. Emergency power supply function and backup supply for the entire householdGenerating and storing solar power is now so cost-effective that today many PV systems are installed with battery-storage systems already included. But often, owners of older PV systems would also like to use more solar power themselves or expand a battery-storage system that is now too small because they have bought an electric car, for example. “In any situation, the Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 is the ideal solution thanks to its high degree of flexibility and integrated functions,” explained Thomas Thierschmidt, Platform Product Manager at SMA. “In addition to the standard functions of a battery inverter, the Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 provides an emergency power supply function as standard. Furthermore, it can be expanded by adding a backup system to supply the entire household in the event of a power outage. The AC coupling also means there is no need to interfere with the PV system to integrate batteries with the Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 or increase the storage capacity. Conversely, the PV system can also be expanded independently of the storage system. This makes life particularly straightforward and saves resources for installers and system owners.” Additional batteries can be integrated thanks to new firmware updateTo provide the best storage solution for every customer and to enable it to adapt to changing needs anytime, SMA works closely with all leading battery manufacturers. The Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 can integrate up to three batteries – regardless of whether commissioning was carried out with only one battery, for example. With the recent firmware update, the Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 is now also compatible with the latest high-voltage batteries BMZ Hyperion, IBC SOLAR era: powerbase, AXITEC AXIstorage LI SH as well as BYD Battery-Box Premium HVM and Battery-Box Premium HVS. In addition, the LG Chem RESU10M – which, like all other high-voltage batteries from LG, has already been compatible with the Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 for quite some time – has now also been approved for multi-battery operation and the emergency power supply function. You can find further information about the Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 here.A full list of the batteries compatible with the Sunny Boy Storage 3.7–6.0 is available here. Sales increased by 42% compared with the first half of 2019 to €514 million (H1 2019: €363 million). The growth is mainly the result of the strong project business in the U.S. and the ongoing positive trade business in Europe. From January to June 2020, EBITDA amounted to €24 million, considerably higher than the comparative figure for the previous year (EBITDA margin: 4.7%; H1 2019: €9 million, 2.3%). Net income improved significantly to €3 million in the first half of 2020 (H1 2019: –€14 million). Earnings per share thus amounted to €0.08 (H1 2019: –€0.41). With net cash of €201 million (December 31, 2019: €303 million) and an equity ratio of 42.1% (December 31, 2019: 37.6%), SMA has a sustainably solid balance-sheet structure. “We are also feeling the effects of the coronavirus crisis and generated lower sales than expected in the second quarter,” said SMA Chief Executive Officer Jürgen Reinert. “Nevertheless, we were able to significantly increase our sales and earnings year-on-year both in the first half of the year as a whole and in the second quarter of 2020, and also achieve a positive result at EBIT level. This was possible only thanks to SMA‘s good IT infrastructure, the great dedication and flexibility of our employees, active supplier management, and our continuous customer support. Another very positive aspect is that we did not have to use any government support. As we had forecast, the order intake in the second quarter was lower as a result of the coronavirus crisis. However, we anticipate a global recovery in demand in the coming months. In this context, we still expect to be able to meet our sales and earnings targets. We also see good prospects for SMA in the medium and long term. In tackling the coronavirus crisis, there is a historic opportunity to make the economy more sustainable and resilient. Use of renewable energy will play a crucial role here. Political initiatives such as the European Green Deal and U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden’s climate protection plan are steps in the right direction. Now we need to consistently implement them. SMA is ready and ideally equipped to help shape this process with our extensive expertise and our innovative and sustainable technologies.“ Despite the continuing coronavirus crisis, the SMA Managing Board is confirming its sales and earnings guidance for the 2020 fiscal year published on February 7, 2020. It predicts a sales increase to between €1.0 billion and €1.1 billion. SMA is well positioned to gain market shares even in the current circumstances. The Managing Board is also implementing further cost reduction measures. Against this background, the SMA Managing Board is still expecting an increase in EBITDA to between €50 million and €80 million. SMA and its project partners using artificial intelligence to create even more reliable and efficient PV and storage systems

Solar energy is already capable of replacing conventional energy generation systems in many regions of the world. This trend is being driven by digitalization and connectivity. Therefore, SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) and its project partners eoda GmbH, TESVOLT GmbH, KEO GmbH, the University of Kassel and Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg) are now investigating the potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence to further increase efficiency and reliability of PV and storage systems as part of the Digital Twin Solar research project. The project is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Inverters are key components of PV systems. They deliver optimal energy yields and reliable system monitoring, supply solar power to the utility grid, and help ensure the stability and safety of the utility grids thanks to grid management services. “The devices provide valuable data that is already being used today to improve the integration of solar energy into the utility grid,” said project manager André Gensler, Senior Data Scientist at SMA. “Connecting the inverters with other system components allows even more extensive data recording and thus the model-driven generation of a ‘digital twin’ for entire PV systems. This means that it will also be possible going forward to optimize more extensive system facilities using machine learning. Together with our partners for the Digital Twin Solar project, we are exploring the options for developing pioneering data-based services from this. For example, these services could include solutions for the predictive maintenance of PV systems. This will allow solar and battery storage systems to be planned and operated even more efficiently and reliably and make an even greater contribution to ensuring a sustainable, secure and cost-effective global energy supply.” The Digital Twin Solar research projectThe Digital Twin Solar joint research project, which has just been launched, is scheduled to run for three years and focuses on digital twin solutions that are tailored specifically to solar energy use and energy storage systems. The project is backed by a grant of around €3.5 million from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. All available data will be analyzed and evaluated – from data acquisition in development and production right through to operation of the PV and battery systems at the respective location. The required conceptual, system-specific, technological and scientific bases will be formulated. Deployment-ready pilot systems will be developed and tested for the first selected and promising application scenarios. Manufacturers of inverters and battery systems, system solution providers and companies from the information and communication technology and data technology sectors are working closely together with the relevant research institutions in the project.
